What is Dyspraxia?

"Dyspraxia" means difficulty with the patterns of movements in speech. Children with verbal dyspraxia have difficulty in controlling and co-coordinating the movements of the speech muscles necessary for clear and coherent speech.

Who works with children with Dyspraxia?

How do Speech and Language Therapist decide whether a child may have dyspraxia?

A speech therapist will investigate Dyspraxia in children when a child may:

* have speech disorder, * make very slow progress in therapy; * speech error pattern is inconsistent; * Evidence of other motor control difficulties i.e. problems with lip and tongue movements.

How do Speech Therapists assess children with suspected Dyspraxia?

The main purpose of the assessment stage is to explore the childs language and communication skills using the following methods.

1.Observation & interaction with the child during play activities.
2.Use of recognised clinical assessments, which investigate core language skills Oral motor assessment
3.Information gathering from parents and other professionals
4.The therapist can then build profile of the childs strength and needs and implement the appropriate therapy programme.

A Speech therapist may work with child to:
* Helping the child to make single sounds
* Improving ability to repeat sounds and swap from one sound to another
* Helping the child to use these sounds in words
* Building up from words to sentences
* Improve the movements of the mouth
